Sad, sad day.
tycho on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amat least it isn’t a clunking noise.
you need a genius and a pair of really good headphones.
Danny on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amnotice how the PC isn’t singing.
Chuck on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amI actually had that exact noise in my 15 inch Powerbook G4. It is a fan gone bad. Apple fixed it and then it happened to me again. Same problem different fan and I had to send it back in again.
It is a horrendous noise and I feel your pain. It really begins to eat at your brain. For one the noise is just awful and two it shouldn’t happen, especially twice in the same MAC.
I hope you get it fixed soon. If I can help in anyway, just email me.
Best,
Chuck
Remo Williams on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amThat’s a mac for ya! They sing songs and have a great marketing department, but do they make hardware that is worth the cash? I highly recommend Alienware.
Jeff on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amMaybe it was that Gateway mouse, hope you got the Apple Care warranty.
Andrew on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amthat happened to me a few months ago….its a failing fan
Clintus McGintus on Jun 25th 2007 at 11:11 amI caught the tail end of that conversation yesterday before you took a nap. Bummer.
Dewayne on Jun 26th 2007 at 11:11 ampoor baby.. thats terrible tap it a few times and hope it goes away. heheh
Annie on Jun 26th 2007 at 11:11 amI hope you have AppleCare
(Who am I kidding? I’m SURE you’ve got it!)
Dionne on Jun 27th 2007 at 11:11 amI have to say, I stubbled here out of bordem and when I usually find blogs I’m still bored, but you my friend have the greatest, most entertaining blog I’ve ever read/watched/stubbled across! It’s even better than my best friend’s blog (please do not quote me on that anywhere she can see) lols. I’d like to do a link exchange with you or at the least LINK YOU. So this is me, Dionne, asking for permission. Do you mind?
Paul Stamatiou on Jun 27th 2007 at 11:11 amIt sounds like a fan is dying and/or hitting something. If the sound is coming from directly under the left palm rest then it’s the hard drive in which case you better back up now.
ClunkClunk on Jun 27th 2007 at 11:11 amI think Paul is on the money with the diagnosis of the fan having trouble. There’s two fans in the MacBook Pro, one on the left, one on the right, and it sounds like your left fan has a bad bearing, or one of the pieces of tape that holds down wires in the MBP came loose and is interfering with the blades. To test to be sure it’s the fan and not the hard drive, download and install Fan Control 1.1 and crank the fans up to full blast (6000rpm) for a few minutes, and hopefully the sound should change, indicating it’s the fan.
It’s a fairly quick fix to get a new fan assembly in there if your machine is under warranty or Applecare. If it’s not, I don’t believe the parts are horrifically expensive, but it might be worth taking the machine apart, and seeing if you can find anything interfering with the fan blades.
Dom Barnes on Jun 27th 2007 at 11:11 amOh dear Justine. I had a similar sounding problem like that a few weeks back on my G4 Powerbook. The hard drive sounded like a fan with a stick in it!
My solution? A weird one, uninstall Virtual PC (that was one hell of a mistake installing that Microsoft bastard child). Got to a terminal, deleted the startup files it had installed and back to normal.
I doubt that would help you, so I guess I’m really just rubbing it in.
Sorry!
h.g. ezarik on Jun 28th 2007 at 11:11 amCall Apple, I am sure they don’t want you to tell the world that you mac is having an attack, who would then buy a mac? Mac Attacks are not good.
Find a symathetic Mac user to show you how to rid this mmmmmmmmmm from your machine.sorry, I am happy when you are happy. You appear to be super stressed. Hope you have a successful stint in MN. Bye Love, Gram
warley on Jun 29th 2007 at 11:11 amPatrick Norton had a noisy P/S fan so he stuck a screw driver into it. It struck a “hot” wire and basicly blew up. So be careful. I bet if you could hit it with some compressed air it might fix it.
Its very noticable on your lifecast. - cheerio : )
Kirk on Jun 29th 2007 at 11:11 amI’ve experienced the exact same sound twice on a 1st Gen MBP. Left fan went out first… right fan went out about a month later. Had both replaced and no problems since.
