DADDY DEERCAST

Last night I went home to visit my parents. As I walked in the house, I noticed my dad sitting at the kitchen table watching television. Now, what was on the screen is nothing you’ll find on any station.. ever. It appeared to be my backyard with a bunch of deer running around.

Yes, it’s true. My dad has a deercast. Much more of an elaborate set-up than I have for lifecasting!

He uses an infared camera in the woods with a motion sensor. When a deer (or anything walks into range) the camera turns on, transmits a signal to the receiver in the house, then it will turn on the TV and VCR. It’ll record to the VCR and you can watch live on any TV in the house.

So, anyone want to party?

Nice tech setup!

What kind of gear does he use, and “what does your daddy do?” is it an expensive exercise?
Maybe Make Magazine has done an article/video on this?

i seriously think this should go on JTV. Just imagine the chats. “Why won’t the deer talk to me?” “Are the deer broadcasting or taking a break today?” “Where are the deer today?” “That deer is a jerk!”

I will totally watch it. Sounds so much like from the movie, Enemy of the State, which a naturalist had a camera to monitor the wild geese.

Technology runs in our family, I am afraid, but it does make life interesting, we need to keep up with advances in science, we don’t want to be left behind.
You know how that goes, deer stories abound when we get together, as well as tech talk, such as best battery charger, capacitors, Photoshop, phone chat/text and the lastest best YouTube video. We still watch Jus’ Jig.

@iJustine: Do you have an equipment list for your dad’s setup? I’ve been considering something like this for a bird sanctuary that exists directly behind my house so I’d be interested in the details of his approach.

that would be hilarious to watch that chat. and I like how he’s oldschool using a VCR instead of a computer, even though he has all that techy motion sensor crap
