I can’t take it anymore! All of you people are animals! Just leave Steve alone! Every blog entry or news article I’ve read in the past few weeks is someone complaining about the iPhone price drop or bashing Steve Jobs for his open letter to us!

No-one held any of your hands and forced you into the Apple Store to buy an iPhone the first day it was out! Did they?! No! They didn’t! You could have waited until the next generation or even until the price drop but you didn’t! That’s not Steve’s fault — It’s yours.

He gave you $100 store credit and a public letter of apology. What more do you want?

One letter in particular caught my attention from this woman who claims to have been a life long Apple user and is now divorcing all of her Apple products to eBay! Good! I’m glad! You don’t deserve to be graced with the presence of anything Apple!

For someone so engrossed in technology as she claims to be, she should have known that a price drop would be right around the corner! That’s the name of the game, sister!

Here’s an excerpt of her letter to Steve:

“Your decision to lower the price of an 8G to lower than the price of my 4G only nine weeks after you came out with the 4G is insulting. I have worked in software development since 1981, so I know it can be a bumpy road, but why would you go out and create more bumps for the community who helped you to be successful for so many years? I could understand the price lowered a slight bit after we have had our iphone for 6 months or so.

I feel used as a test market, and manipulated by the timing and severe price drop of a product and a company which I have helped to promote. A hundred bucks of store credit is too small a gesture. The 4G iPhone I waited in line for 9 weeks ago is obsolete.

So I am divorcing Apple for irreconcilable differences. My alimony is a $100 store credit, and the children (my Macs, iPods and other products) will go to foster care in eBay.

I am joining my friends on the “dark side” because Apple doesn’t look so sunny or friendly anymore. Fly your flags at half-mast. It is a sad day for former Apple supporters.”

Hi Justine,
Sorry, but I agree that Apple just uses it’s customers as a test platform and makes them pay for it. Like a six year(and counting) beta test on their pathetically inept pile of digital cr** they call OSX. It’s just now functionally approaching what it should have been when it was released in 2001. But greedy money grubbing Apple charges full price for every .1 update. I was thrilled when Steve came back to Apple. But that changed when he decided to bring his NeXT OS with him and have Mrs. Johnson’s kindergarten class design an interface for it. Hmm.. or did he take it to the zoo and have the chimps design it? I now hate Apple, and have lost all respect for his Steveness.

I used to be one of the biggest Mac headed windows bashers that you’d ever find. I have made my living on the Mac since 1986 and it used to be that I couldn’t wait to get to work in the morning. But since Steve forced OSX on us, I dread it every day.

I own the 8GB, and I love it. However, with that said:

Sorry, ‘tine, but Shayna is dead on target.

The price drop so soon after rolling out the product was an absolute dick move designed to improve the profit margin of a company that’s currently valued at $140 a share.

Like Shayna, I could see if the price dropped at the end of October, or the beginning of November for THE holidays. When Jobs mentioned the ‘holiday rush’ rationale in his open letter, it took me a second to realize that he was talking about Veteran’s Day and Halloween — not Thanksgiving and Christmas — apparently the new holidays that everybody is shopping for.

And the iStore credit is a joke. Other than a shuffle (uh, I bought the phone, so the shuffle really doesn’t help me) or a bunch of iPhone covers that have average to below-average customer reviews, there’s nothing in the store that I can purchase without shelling out ADDITIONAL cabbage for. Honestly, there’s nothing there I really want or need.

My hope — dashed upon reading the terms of the credit — was that iTunes would be included so I could fill my iPhone with some cool stuff (Knight Rider, Rocky III, Flickerstick, Mister Magoo, A-Team, etc.) to watch and/or listen at my leisure.

But no. I’m settling for selling the apple credit for the $100. It’s Season 2 of Knight Rider or bust, baby! Interested?

I feel, well, ‘Jobbed’ by the situation.

Again, I love the phone. It’s incredibly useful on a daily basis (it helped me write this, see the Apple stock quote above) and the sound quality of the phone and AT&T’s service is far beyond what Verizon Wireless ever offered. All of this despite syncing it with (GASP!) an HP Pavilion.

But if they want to make me feel better about being the excited customer/apparent future idiot who couldn’t wait, they can do one of at least two things: 1) Update the software so I don’t have to go to a Web site to receive a picture message, or 2) Give me a refund/credit that does me some good.

I mean, seriously … if I wanted a hummer, I’d hit up a skank on Liberty Ave.

Happy Holidays … only 40 shopping days until Halloween.

Ridiculous reaction people are having. Justine is right, nobody forced anyone into buying anything. Production costs come down and in light of the iPod Touch it would seem costs came down dramatically. So they immediately passed it on to consumers. To make it less of a blow your getting a free 100.00 to spend on your next apple purchase. A pretty fair deal if you ask me. I can’t say I have ever heard of say Sony or Microsoft giving someone a credit because the cost of a Playstation or Xbox has went down. To Scott who referred to OSX being terrible…..I would really like to know what you consider any better. Sure it has it issues, as all do…but its better than anything else currently available. Sure they charge for every major release….would you reather pay 129.00 or 400.00 for the not so “ultimate” version of Vista. Fair price as far as I am concerned. Rock on Justine….

Thank you, Justine. You are completely right. $200 is the price you pay for being the first one on the block with the latest and greatest. You don’t ever hear the Jones’ complaining that they over payed for their 100″ plasma or 12.1 surround sound system??! NO! Because they know that if they are going to be at the top, they will pay the premium.

That’s a good point microsoft has kind of fallen off of the most hated companies radar. Even though vista is a horrible trainwreck of an operating system. But, did I moan that Bill Gates is a horrible human being for using his customers as a test market? No I just didn’t buy the flipping OS because I knew it was going to be a piece and I like XP just fine (Which, for the record, was a bit of a piece when it rolled out). Few companies engage in “ethical” business practices these days, and sadly that is something we are all going to have to accept. Even the good ones are prone to bad advice and decision making of the same ilk. I doubt Steve Jobs had much to do with the actual decision making anyway. Random R/D guy: “Hey Steve-o, by the way we doubled the capacity and found a cheaper way of making iphones”. To which Jobs replies “great, wonderful, awesome, do it”. And by this time the rollout has already been planned hype is high so they decide not to change plans and lose millions of dollars (I know not many people realize it but a nationwide roll out of a product this popular for a company the size of Apple actually takes time to plan and costs money to pull off). I don’t think that ethics the real issue here though (and yes I ramble, but do try to stay with me because I think I have a point). The issue is that any piece of technology (iphone, Operating Systems…tama…gotchis?) is ultimately tested on the public by being released into the world (Ipods didn’t become worth a damn til somewhere around Gen4). It’s not like Steve Jobs is sitting in his 14th century gothic castle, or underground volcano layer, or (insert favorite bond bad guy lair here), running around naked and rubbing $100 bills on his genitals while he laughs maniacally at all the poor suckers that he just ripped off. I just don’t think that’s the case. A decision was made that was good for him, his business, and his employees, pure and simple. People need to stop taking things like this so personally and stop thinking that they’re so special. They aren’t. A $100 credit at the apple store and a form letter apology is more than a lot of company’s will give you. And to the best of my knowledge they were not delivered by way of a swarm of flying monkeys (though it is an interesting mental picture). Bottom line in todays world of technology that is advancing at an exponential rate, when you buy something because it is new and shiny, on the day it comes out, chances are pretty high that you’ll have an inferior product 9 weeks later.

The question isn’t how much the price dropped on the iPhone x weeks after she bought it. The question is… “If it was still the same price as when you bought it, would it still be a good buy?” The answer, of course, is in the affirmative.
