If Apple failed to have people understand how to hold the phone correctly, Apple has failed.

I guess it’s just Hollywood’s poor attempt at fitting in.

well thats hollywood for you as much as we try and fit in using the technology is still beyond our grasp!

Well, I can’t speak for the rest of my town. But I’m one Hollywood resident who knows how to use his iPhone.

hollywood is using it the right way. they have special iphones that work “upside down.” pretty soon everyone will be ordering the”upside down iphone” and walking around with thick rimmed glasses a sport coat and driving a prius. my “upside downer” is in the mail. truly madly deeply. - alexj

i truly think that they do not want anyone to know that they are using iphones.
apple is not paying them for advertising and the shows don’t just give advertising away, so they try to make it look like a different phone.

or, the iphones they use for their shows aren’t even on, so they think that the sensor slit is the mic and the speaker/mic at the bottom is the speaker.

This has been my experience… for those not familiar with the iPhone, specifically the back of the iPhone, the apple logo is mirrored (and acts as a damn fine miniature mirror I might add) but is a DP’s nightmare! The extremely bright lights on the set are “caught” on occasion in the mirror projecting out to the camera’s lens is distracting - then killing the scene, taking the viewer out of the storyline. (if even for a brief moment)
Gaffer’s tape would look cheesy over the logo… but probably not as cheesy for owners that know the difference that it’s upside down!!! and… Action!

In response to the comment below by Derek Steen, when iPhones arrive in Australia, the way Charlie Sheen is holding the iPhone will actually be the correct way. This will apply to anywhere “down-under” and south of the Equator.

I can’t believe they’d use a $300 iPhone as a prop. Give it to someone who knows how to use it!

Well I am betting Sheen was drunk. Not to mention there are two other things in the scene that would make a man or maybe some women forget how to use an iFone, a new Ferrari and a hot and easy blond woman. I would forget how to hold it if those two things were in reach. Grab the keys, grab the girl and toss the phone! There is my 3 cents.

I’m guessing they might have to do it for licensing issues. The show probably would have to get permission from Apple to have the characters mention it in the show- I would guess the same rules would apply to have it be used right side up, since then it would be more identifiable as an iPhone?

They want their characters to look cool, with new technology, but they wind up looking tech-tarded

Anyhow - if they don’t want to advertise for apple - plenty of other phones out there to choose from. I can’t even begin to speculate on this.

I think they know how to use an iPhone, but they just don’t want to get in trouble with Steve. I mean, you know how on some shows they put a piece of tape or some other thing on top of a label of food? Yeah. I think it’s the same concept.

That’s really funny. It’s not that hard to figure out which way the iPhone goes.

Justine don’t think it’s a mishap. I think that they are doing it on purpose for some legal reasons.

@David Michael — That thought definitely crossed my mind, but hey.. It’s more fun to say they don’t know how to use an iPhone (which, I’m hoping isn’t true).

I think the reason they hold it the wrong way is to block the logo. they do this with a lot of things in TV so they don’t give free advertising to a company that doesn’t support the show. if there is a company that supports a show, they readily show the label or say its name. If not then they hold it so you cant see the label, although you know what it is.

I think this is just one more wonderful statement directed at the genius of the iPhone’s design. You actually can use it upside down. I tried it all day yesterday in this mode and it had a “dictation device” feel to it. When earphones are not close by, put in speakphone mode… calls and iPod songs blast well especially in noisy places or for additional person listening. Not too many another phones can pull off this method effectively. Looks, schmooks.

Shows the intelligence of our idols, the actors

It’s upside down so the logo doesn’t have a chance to show. You will notice that many shows have Apple laptops but the apple on the reverse side has been hidden.

I was in line at the movie theater the other week and saw a guy walking around talking on his iPhone upside down. I’m not really sure what was happening, but I pulled out my iPhone, pretended I had a call, caught his eye and then looked at my phone to make sure it was right side up, and put it to my ear in a way that he would have to see the correct way to use this wonderful device. Hopefully he caught on.

Hey I know the make-up artist for “Two and a Half Men” so next family get together I’ll let her know to talk to Charlie about it.
