Macbook Air

Ahh, the beautiful little Macbook Air. It’s actually quite impressive. Although I do have the same fears that many are also having: Is this this next Cube? Who knows.. Guess we’ll see.

Either way, it’s pretty neat and I’d suggest checking it out.

It comes standard with an 80 gig hard drive (upgrade to a 64GB SSD), 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 13.3 LED display, iSight, 5 hours of battery life, USB 2.0, it also has a micro-DVI port that supports DVI, VGA, composite, and S-video output!! Oh, and it weights about 3lbs

If they reduce the size of it to 7 inches, added more usb ports and included built in EVDO, it would be a lifecaster’s dream machine.

I cannot wait till the macbook air comes to our apple store!! It’s going to be so exciting!

First thought, like many, was that this will meet the same fate of the Powermac Cube. But after thinking about why Apple chose to make this, I really believe this was brilliant. Apple needed a companion to go with the iPhone (a la multi-touch) and this is what Apple made this to be. This is thin and light enough to take out of your bag and and do some quick work. So it caters more to the mobile audience or those who need a simple lightweight computer.

I’m excited to get my hands on one too when I go to San Francisco next month.

Sorry, but the Eee PC from Asus beats the Macbook Air hands-down. Just because it’s Apple doesn’t mean that it’s better.

I also think that the Asus Eee PC is better than the Macbook Air … less expensive, less cumbersome and more connectivity … of course, the Macbook Air is thinnest & more powerful …

I agree with Kevin that the Macbook Air is a great companion for the iPhone, but um… Justine are you ok? It’s intersting how you just passed out on the video and everyone just goes on talking about the Macbook Air as if nothing happened…

Actually, I have to disagree that EEE PC beats Macbook Air. EEE’s smaller, thinner, lighter, and cheaper. That’s true, but why?

Because EEE comes with a 7″ screen (vs Air’s 13″), less than 1 GHz processor (vs Air’s baseline 1.6 GHz), 1G of RAM (vs Air’s standard 2G), 8GB solid state disk (vs Air’s 80GB harddrive or 64GB SSD upgrade), and has only 3 hours of battery life (vs Air’s 5-hour life).

@Natasha: Haha, yes.. I am okay. It was kinda odd that no one said ANYTHING after I fell. Well, other than Karen.

My real thoughts on the Macbook Air: It is not the ideal laptop for those who actually use their computer extensively. I would LOVE to have this for traveling to check email and do simple things (of which an iPhone can do as well) ..but to actually edit and I do everything I need to do? Hardly. With only one USB port and no Firewire? This really wouldn’t be an upgrade from my current Macbook Pro.

Are you ok Justine? Do you know what might have led up to you passing out? Too much excitement? Didn’t sleep much the night before? Too much Starbucks? Or maybe it was Macbook Air… did it leave you weak in the knees?

Glad to hear you’re ok. I also noticed that the Macbook Air has no firewire and only 1 usb port …. definitely not an upgrade for the Macbook Pro (which is my next computer purchase btw). The more I think about it, the more I too wonder if this one has the same fate as the cube…

I’m not so worried. The new portability trumps the slightly slower hard drive and the one USB port. (I can get a cheap hub for home use.) As for the Eee, it’s cool, but it’s Linux. As a non-techie, it’s the usability of Leopard/Mac that makes it a non-starter for me. Worse, I can’t imagine trying to type up a story from the press box on an Eee keyboard. The price diff is enough to get me to think about it and if I couldn’t afford the MBA, the Eee would be a strong contender … or maybe I’d just stick with my 2 yr old Macbook.

Looks really good actually!…but is it too thin? =)

Next time you are close to pass out…take your head between your legs and stay like that for a while. It will help, I promise! =)
And don´t forget do drink water

I agree, Justine. The big deal breaker for me is no integrated WWAN. If it had evdo, I would definitely consider it if I needed an ultraportable.

Why would I want a laptop that could blow away in the wind, when I could have something MUCH better that, that doesn’t have Mac OS and is half the cost! Commmmeeeonnnn…
