This is the crap I deal with everyday. I can’t talk to anyone about anything here at work, at home, or with any of the people I hang out with on a constant basis. We ARE the minority and THAT feels good.

So bummed I wasn’t there… Next year, I’m in for sure. Hopefully for both the Music and Interactive sessions…

We should applaud their ignorance. Musicians are cooler than geeks, aren’t they?

Funny stuff… - reminds me of myself trying to explain all these social apps. and sites to people at work, and them not getting it.

Last time I checked, SXSW was originally intended as a venue for independent musicians to showcase their work. I don’t think it does much good to get in people’s faces and act all smarmy because they don’t know what Ruby on Rails is at what primarily began as a music festival. Nobody likes an elitist.

I loved walking around a conference without getting noticed, without having anyone blog about me, and without getting pitched every few minutes by a PR person.

i thought it was funny when justine was asking about php and ruby on rails and everyone was clueless

@Robert: I should send you a few clips when I asked people if they knew of your “band”. Nope, not a clue

@Jeremy: Agreed, but I’m not gonna lie.. If they would have turned the tables on me and started asking music questions, I might have cried!

I do find it amusing that (most) Internet nerds think it’s so funny that (most) music nerds don’t know or care anything about each other’s worlds.

Really brilliant, Justine. I was laughing along. Those guys wanted to cooperate…just didn’t know what you were talking about. And it’s a great reminder that there’s a vast world out there that couldn’t give a whoop about tech geeks. Too funny.

Good for them. They apparently spend time actually living, rather than reading about other people doing things. I’d love to interview Justine about a variety of things I doubt she would have any knowledge of, and then air the video.

I have a couple of friends who went to SXSW, and I didn’t even realise it had two separate components… wish I could have been there.

That was great Justine. I love the people who have on viddler shirts, and have no clue what it is.

Count me in as one of those few people who loves both music AND technology! –Though I can’t stand snobs of either.

BTW, PHP pwns. Haven’t used Ruby on Rails yet.

I am one of the few that experiences SXSW from start to finish and it is wonderful to see the changeover from Interactive to Film and then Music. Each different group has their own vibe with some crossover between the groups. I loved the lolcats panel and lifehacker book reading as well as the Alamo Drafthouse and then getting to see REM, Serj Tankian, Wheatus and a ton of Japanese rock bands.

This makes me want to stay for Music next year. What a contrast to interactive.

Having attended music for years and just now starting to attend interactive I can say this is the best display of how pretentious the music portion really is. Notice the inability to “ask” what someone is talking about rather than admitting they don’t know something. The almost knee jerk reaction to label a random name (Mark Zuckerberg) as alt-country or noise. Nice job iJustine.

Even staying for that last night of interactive, the vibe changes a lot. It seems like at interactive most of us are there to learn from each other, so conversation is paramount. At music, they’re mostly there looking for their big break, so they fill the in-between times with, um, other activities

But does beg the question why the conference carries such a contrasting audience and agenda. I’ve never been there so what’s the catch of combining the two?
Of course, next year they’ll have a cool looking music person interviewing techheads………I don’t think that would be very pretty.

I went to Interactive, and those people who are the music people seem like WAY more fun. I gotta stay for music next year. They were much more fun, lose, and seemed actually happy. Very cool!

@Matthew Wettergreen : I was the “alt country/noise” guy and I wasnt pretending to know or label anything. I was loaded and having fun and on my way to see a bunch of bands play. You should try it sometime. Justine, It was great meeting you.

Haha! It’s so much fun to patronize music attendees at SXSW! And your editing! Woo! I love that Andy Griffith-esque bullshit guitar track that surreptitiously illustrated how stupid everyone was! You’re killing me! If you want to interview people about how they feel about Ruby on Rails or Mark Zuckerberg, do it at SXSW Interactive. You’ll have plenty of “pretentious” a-hole proselytizers rambling about the brilliance of social media networking and web development. Here’s a good idea for a panel: Networking Without the Crutch of a Laptop or iPhone: Can YOU Hold A Five-Minute Conversation With Another Human?
