Facebook: No Friends for you!

“No friends for you! Come back 5 days!”

I know it shouldn’t be something to complain about and every time I do everyone says “Waaaaaaaaa we don’t care that you have too many friends on Facebook. Get a page!”

..and the way they say “Get a page” — in the 2.0 space it reminds me of the “get a room” phrase we used to yell at those people in the hall in between class in high school. What? No no no! No page! No room! Noo! Waaaaa.

The downfall of pages is that it isn’t actually a profile. It’s just that — a page. People come and go and the only real interaction you have with them is sending a mass message to their account. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t write on their wall from my ‘page account’ or comment photos or do all the things that makes facebook amazing. Like giving gifts..

*sigh* I’m going to go try to find someone to cry to that might care. Chances are that won’t happen

Speaking of Facebook, did you know Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t really have a favorite treat?

I’ve always thought this was a stupid rule. I first heard about it when Kevin Smith (the director) ran into that problem. He ended up getting a page, but I can’t remember how that went. Likely, it didn’t go well, if I can’t even remember hearing from him via Facebook about how it went.

I agree about it being a stupid rule. That’s like saying that Starbucks can serve only a given number of drinks each day.

Now. First things first.
Norm here. @carmanavenue and I have been discussing said issue. Fist things first. You have 5000 facebook friends which means you are more popular than Ghandi or Scoble or Brogan, but ya equality is important (not really, this is the internet, you are the internet why do I need to explain this to you).

You are friends with FSJ. He has Zuckberg in his pocket. Seriously.

OK so I know you already know this, but Open Social will be main stream soon and it will be better than most.. um.. well.. everything. iJustine keep the faith we need you. @carmanavenue is on the phone with facebook right now. We will vidicate you, n’at or something fierce.

That sucks!! I had no idea there was a limit on friendship!! Poor Justine!!!!!!!!

I’ve seen Facebook pages with more than 5,000 fans. I think you need to setup a special celebrity or group account. I didn’t realize they had a limit of 5,000. I wouldn’t know because my Facebook account has 0 (zero) friends.

But clearly you can’t maintain normal friend-like relationships with over 5,000 people. I doubt you could do it with over a thousand, and that’s Facebook’s point; at that stage it’s not about relationships so much as it is an address book with contacts of ever-decreasing familiarity.

That stinks. I think I’m going to cry :’-(
I hate that you’re having this problem. I know that I won’t have to worry about this happening to me anytime soon. I don’t have enough friends to have to worry about limits on either facebook or myspace, so I’m safe. It is a very stupid rule, however.
