Flickr Video is great! I’ll be uploading some nifty clips of my “Long photos” as flickr is calling them soon.

I’m a photographer and an avid flickr supporter.

Do I not like videos on flickr…. NOPE! I love it.
What better way to share behind the scene images w/ my friends, family, and “fan base” on flickr. Yes, it’s nice to get them to go offsite to a blog post about a photo shoot.

But a quick “teaser” or “how to” on how a photo was created, w/ out having to jump to some other site. Heck ya!

You are so totally right. And hey, if you ask me, the name Flickr actually connotes video more than it does photos. After all, videos “flicker.” Photos don’t. Fuck all those Flickr Btchrs!

Thanks so much for posting that. Whenever people COMPLAIN about things it just reveals their focus on lack, limitation, and weakness. Thank you for being a self promoter and a REAL WOMAN! Whiners and complainers keep getting more of what they complain about and create for themselves. If you want to put videos on Flickr then do it and be happy about it. It means more traffic and sales for people like you and me. People who understand that “smart is the NEW sexy!” Keep up the great work : )

Their whining almost reminds me of LiveJournal users and their “protest”. Just almost.

I would have to agree the purist thing is way over done. They are keeping it simple stupid by limiting the video to 90 seconds and not trying to build another youtube. I originally didn’t agree with the limited capabilities of the Flickr video but now I get it after hearing their explanation on Buzz Out Loud. I still see some potential for more features but want them to maintain the simplistic approach.

It has a different feel now that it has video. Not a bad one, just diff. Does anyone else think it a little light away from the major photographers? Now people that are good with vids will also have some light hehhe. Maybe they are scarred the others will steal their light lol. Okay starting to ramble now.

I just think that if flickr wants to really reach the mainstream audience (which every website does) then this is a great next step.

Most of the ‘early adopters’ and pro-photographers definitely don’t want that.. but hey, I don’t really think we get much of a choice.

As long as they don’t become a second youtube and the length of the videos is limited to a few seconds, I think it’s a great idea. Flickr said, that it should be like an extended photo! The people who are protesting should take a minute to think about, if it’s really clever to complain about a step in a new era! People who missed the “Internet boat” a few years ago, because the said internet is so evil, are now lost in the ocean….

People, mainly photographer are up in arms because flickr was originally just photos, like Youtube is just for videos. I don’t see a lot of harm if flickr keeps the size of videos low. I don’t really see a difference, just the new play button on some photos. It’s not like they’re pushing videos more. Get with the times people.

I fail to see the issue. People are complaining, but why? I haven’t seen one *good* reason to be against it.

So people are looking for good reasons? Here are mine.

Flickr is one of the few places on the net for photographers, where the size of the community is large enough to make a difference - i.e. there is a real sense of community there, something I personally haven’t found elsewhere in other photo sharing sites. The size helps. Elsewhere I wouldn’t have had an opportunity to have made contact with local people - there wouldn’t have been enough of them. Something about “critical mass” and new media I guess.

My feeling, is that if Yahoo wants to start another Video community (and lets be honest there are already quite a few) I don’t see why they don’t do it through some other site. Sure use the technology they’ve developed for Flickr - connect the userids (openid I guess) whatever - make them sister sites even - but having videos randomly inside the current structure seems a bit invasive to the current community. So perhaps I’m unnecessarily worried. But I don’t want Flickr to become quite the “wild west” that some of the video sites have become.

Not only was I unaware that Flickr added video, I had no clue folks were protesting it.

Agreed! Flickr Video is awesome. I’ve already uploaded a few treats on it. it’s nice to have a place to put your unedited little bits of footage that you don’t have time to edit, but wanna share with your friends.

Flickr video is great for the average person who wants photo and videos. And *that* is how flickr is going to grow: the average consumer.

I’m all for Flickr. The thing is they are aiming for a different kind of video.
Youtube is for your friends getting kicked in the nuts, tv show clips, and that rubbish.
Vimeo is for serious HD content
Viddler is more video blogging
To me Flickr Video is aimed at those shorts you film on your digital camera and want to share along with your photos.

Sorry I haven’t been commenting very much. School has been quite hectic lately. Anyways, enough with the excuses. I understand the arguments about not wanting to mix photography in with videos. If Flickr wants to have videos, that’s fine. I think that anyway they can reach people to help them grow, so long as it isn’t illegal, is a great thing.

hmmm i’m not against it or anything but it seems kinda strange having videos of flickr.

I can see why flickr has done this, think video content is the future nearly all the log i read these days feature heavy video content.

Like i said i dont have any thing against flickr accepting videos but to me it seems some how wrong picture suit flickr so much better than video and if all these website accept multiple forms of media then arn’t they all the same website.

In my opinion and using the flickr=pictures youtube=vide example

surely it is better to have on website who is concentrating all of their on making the video experience amazing (like viddler are doing?) and another website who can concentrate on making the pictures experience amazing

Any tiny change to the site they always complain.

Don’t they realize people aren’t using it for artsy photos anymore. I just use mine for uploading the ocassional photo. Thats all.

I use Flickr. Do I really care for the video? Meh, I may use it in the future, but at the moment I don’t care. It’s nice that it’s there if I choose to use it. I don’t get why people are complaining. If you don’t like the feature, don’t use it.

Again, people don’t have to use the video. I don’t think it’s invasive and it pretty much just looks like a photo! You don’t have to watch it unless you click on it
