Dry your tears, kids. These are just websites..

I started gathering my thoughts on this topic over on Michael Arrington’s post gloating about getting half of his followers on Twitter now subscribing on FriendFeed in half the time.

Well, no shit — when you have any number of people following you, it’s only natural that at least half of them are going to at least check out something you recommend.. especially your friends following you on twitter!

This doesn’t pertain to just Mike, it’s everyone! Obviously if you’re twitting out to your community to come check out another website.. they’re going to — thus the growth and continued conversation over to FriendFeed.

For example, take the plurk outbreak — does anyone still use that? I can assure you I have zero plans to use that website ever again (but that could be just be me :) )

This entry isn’t even going to go into detailing why one service is better than the other, because what people are really trying to get at is which service will go mainstream first? Which will break out of our little geekfest that we’re all so comfortable participating in?

There was a time when MySpace was oh so new and shiny. It’s doubtful you’ll ever see of the majority of MySpace kids set their little typing fingers on FriendFeed. Hell, ask someone outside of our little tech bubble what techcrunch is and they’ll probably say it’s a cereal.

As much as we all want it to be, tech isn’t mainstream unless you attach some iPod headphones to it. Yes, your sister might have a Macbook and upload videos to YouTube, but how many times has she watched diggnation or listened to a TWiT podcast? Now ask her about leaving Britney Spears alone or biting Charlie?

Point being, reaching a mainstream audience isn’t an easy task.. but at first glance, which site would you have joined first: twitter or FriendFeed? Which would your non-tech friends, siblings, parents, relatives choose and continue to use? Perhaps neither?

Share your thoughts!!! ..and play nice!
