I agree. Twitter is a great news source and its a great way of connecting… just keeping people updated. I will be using it as I travel more out of the country. Mass updates are a lot easier then groups of text messages that have to be sent out the old fashioned way.

i think twitter’s far different from a real blog. the platform and the short maximum length of “messages”, make it a microblog, a place where you can say whatever you want. on twitter you post messages about you life, your thoughts, your passions. don’t care about these stupids… i follow (i’m @adematt) you, you’re funny!

I have always seen Twitter as a micro blog. Btw…justine you are probably one of the more interesting people to follow on Twitter. If someone wants to stop following someone, just do it. No need to post a tweet about it. People just like to complain.

In the mean time, a few thoughts:

1) you DON’T tweet a lot. You’d talked about how you make a point to not be too noisy (unlike me, haha… again, see blog post)
2) Why do people do that?! It’s not a big deal to unfollow someone– why do you have to announce it?? Why make yourself look like a jerk and potentially make someone feel bad instead of just being discrete.
3) twitter = microblog poster child.

This is America and you can tweet however you like!

I thought that twitter was a micro blog too. Now I’m confused. I think that individual needs a lesson on twitter/blogging.

This person clearly doesn’t know their Web 2.0 definitions. A micro-blog is a post that is under 140 characters where as an actual blog post is more than that. This is why one of my twitter etiquette rules ( http://globalgeeknews.com/blog/2008/03/17/twitter-etiquette-part-2/ ) specifically says that you should not split messages up into multiple tweets. If you can’t fit it in 140 characters, its big enough that you should just make a blog post about it.

That said, I have backed off of my once strict stance on how twitter should be used and have adopted a live and let live policy when it comes to Twitter. Use it however you want and I will use it however I choose. Personally, I use it not only as a way to say what I am doing, but I use it to communicate with people, spread news, share cool things I come across and promote my podcasts and blogs. Twitter can be used for many things, so I don’t see why there is a need to be rude to people who don’t use it the exact same way you do.

At least your “nothing” tweets are humorous… usually.

I feel that twitter is a blog. Yeah, some are short and sweet. But it’s a form of blogging. I follow @iJustine because I have been a fan of the stuff that she does since I bumped into her on MySpace. Her videos, blogs, etc is at most times very informative. And then sometimes… they just help create a smile when you’re having a bad day. Also, I followed some people on twitter during the time we were having fires in San Diego. So, other than blogs, twitter is very informative.

So, like Justine said, if you don’t want to follow, then don’t. But don’t criticize that her stuff is about nothing. Most of our tweets are about nothing. Just my two cents!!

People like that just don’t get why Twitter and other social networks exists in the first place. It’s about community and finding out cool, and sometime not so cool, stuff you might not have learned otherwise.

What I get hung up on, and down right annoyed with, is people who think Twitter is an IM and have convos in front of everyone, and don’t use proper @replies, or direct messages. That’s when I stop following someone, and so far I have only un-followed 1 person.

My Twitter tolerance has gone up! So I’m able to follow much more people than I could ever before. There’s lots of interesting conversations out there. And it’s always good to know that you’re safe and all comfy in your new home. Or if you’re eating a really good cookie!

You have to remember the Scoble Law of Twittering.. for every unfollow, you will gain 10! Happy Twittering!

I follow a few people on Twitter right now, mostly 4 two reasons: a) to see what can be done with 140 chars or less and b) to get a glimpse of shorthand English used on such messages. Where I live, Twitter is mostly unknown yet.

Justine, you should use the Seesmic WordPress plugin so that we can leave video comments if we are feeling too lazy to type. I find myself using seesmic alot because I think its better than text comments. Just an idea.

@Daynah I’m totally with you on the twitter tolerance thing! My twitter community has grown organically and as it grew I got more used to reading lots of tweets!

There was a time when I refused to use twitter. I cringed at the idea of broadcasting every little thing I do, and wondered why anyone would care.

But then I realized that Twitter has gone (and perhaps have always been) beyond the “What are you doing” question to also asking:

“What are you thinking?”
“How do you feel about?”
“Do you wanna go?”
“How about this?”
“Think fast!”
etc., etc.

And while it is a blog (though “micro”), I’d like to think of it now as more of an open social dialogue, as well as a reflection of the collective social consciousness. Of course, it’s also one of the best tools to stay connected with your friends… but I was trying to be deep and stuff.

Oh, and… bravo.

Wha? I always treat twitter as a more “on the go” blog. Since my phone isn’t as hi-tech that it’s easy to blog on the go so being able to text to twitter is much easier.

Well - Twitter is what you make of it. Who you follow or don’t shouldn’t really matter. If he really didn’t want to follow you, he should have simply stopped. He’s probably just trying to piggyback off your personal brand and get some attention. Luckily you’re smart enough not to give out his handle!

I love using Twitter! It’s more convenient to update quickly throughout the day then a blog where you have to come up with consistent, well thought out content. Twitter can be more random, and an inside look at people’s lives.

Based on the video that I watched, twitter is the microbloging haven in-between regular blog posts. In other words, it functions as the continuous stream between when a person has the goshdarn time to sit and type something in more than 140 characters on blogger, wordpress or the like. With these supported facts, I conclude that twitter.com is a blog.

Twitter is whatever you want it to be, which is the beauty of being able to follow whoever you want. You can say what you want to say, and if people want to follow you, they can, and if they don’t, they don’t have to. It’s not a blog, but that’s the point. You talk about perfectly normal stuff for the Twitter environment (and in most cases, more normal than many people) and it’s funny to see him say that you’re doing it ‘wrong’.

in fact, twitter isn’t a blog.
a blog, for me, is either a online diary or a collection of stuff i want to save somewhere out of my own home.
but twitter is more like a giant speaker broadcasting what you say more or less all over the world.

if people use twitter as a diary, that’s ok, not interesting for me, but ok.
the only thing i can’t stand is using it as gps logger.
that serves no real purpose instead of feeding a stalker if there is one.

I though this was very funny and well worth posting, especially when looking at the other persons twitter feed. To my understanding twitter post are supposed to be more frequent and less in depth than a normal blog post. If the unnamed twitter didn’t like Justine’s twitter feed she should have just stopped following haters deserve to get put on blast.

I actually found out about this blog thanks to Twitter, so don’t let one guy’s negativity stop you from doing what you want to do. As far as Twitter, my philosophy is to each his own. You have the right to Tweet about whatever you want, just like you have the right to follow or unfollow whomever you choose. It’s just that this guy decided to be a jerk about it and make a public announcement for some reason.

Dear Internet and Justine. I believe the sarcasm was missed in my original post, as someone who works in the web industry for a living, i understand twitter is a blog.
I follow Justine and a number of other bloggers. I was developing a problem in which I had the desire to read all of my many many tweets coming in. I realized most of them were from Justine, and I was questioning why I was prying into the life of a complete stranger, hence “i don’t know why i still follow her”. The problem was mine, not hers. I still read the blog from time to time, and think Justine is a refreshing change from your typical nerdy male bloggers.
Justine, I love your work, keep it up. Sorry for the mis-communication.

P.S. Your army is very friendly, I got about 4 tweets regarding this and none of them were mean.
