Agreed with you on the no camera bit. It would have been great to have iChat/skype video conferences with family/friends half way across the country. For the price there asking, i would have paid that little extra for those features/camera. (less steps to explaining to grandparents on how to connect w/video and having a cheap solution for them!) :-V

I guess they’ll be saving the camera for v2, though it’s a shame that with the “cloud” being a big thing now, that there wasn’t a smaller sized version, such as 8GB or even 1GB. After all, if my emails are stored on Hotmail, my photos on Flickr, and my videos on YouTube, who needs local storage anymore?

Already have an iPhone, so this isn’t that exciting, but thinking about getting the wi-fi version to use as an ereader. Also great if you travel loads like I do.

I don’t think this will take off like the iPhone or iPod. I think this fits in the category of ‘nice if you have money’ (a bit like the Macbook Air).

Nice mini review! Informative and cracks me up. Your blog is now officially new alternative to that enno-gaddgget place. With that said, I’m not buying an iPad. It looks funny, like a giant man’s iPhone. They should have changed the design a bit so that it didn’t look like an iPhone. Plus, 1st gen means bugs, there’s no OLED, and no camera (though the no-cam thing won’t make me scream like some people). Apple should give you free hardware with all this I-Love-Steveo-Jobs-iPhone-iPad talk. That bit in the end was funny…ha-ha.

It is a cool gadget, but no more. If you have an iphone and a computer, i see no need for it (no need, maybe a want)…And if you have a laptop and iphone there is definatly no need.
It is expensive for a “cool gadget” UK Prices havent been announced yet but i have taken a guess and made comparisons on my blog and it doesnt look good.
It will be a fail like the AIR in my opinion. I sort of want one, but i cant justify the cost for something i cant see using.

Usually I would wait for the second generation / edition of the iPad (which most like will come out next year - the usual Apple cycle of products is around 18 months). But since it is basically free ($500 is a pocket change for many of us), I will be getting one - just because it is cool and I will use it in between my MacBook Pro / iMac and iPhone when I am on my couch watching TV. I may actually read some more books now as well.

Sweet review Justine! I agree the camera would be very nice to have, but not necessary. You didn’t mention the redesigned iWork for iPad. That’s a great set of apps to use! I like the 10 hrs of battery life, too. 1 1/2 pounds? I could carry that around. Bubye laptop! Oh and it runs all of the iPhone apps too? Good thinking, instantly available programs. The iBooks store and iPad will render the Kindle obsolete.

I probably won’t buy it. I’ll buy the next iPhone instead, and until then I have my MacBook Pro and iPad nano (iPod touch).

I dont think $500 is pocket change for the majority of people, which who this is supposed to be marketed at. I have saw on some Mac Forums that the majority of people (60-70% in polls - who are obviously mac owners/fans) say they will not get one, or at best wait.

I have a MBP and an iPhone, so i dont know why i would buy this; It is a cool gadget, i want to have one, but at the same time i could buy something better that i would use more. I dont know when i would use this. When relaxing on the couch? Not really, i use my iPhone or MBP if i need something more powerful/bigger.

I will definitely get one, but then I’m such a Mac Geek that I think anything Apple comes out with is pretty cool. I just have to decide if I want the 3G or not. I just got a Nook (like 2 days ago), but my hubby is going to get that and I’m going to read my books directly from the shelf on iBook. I’m giddy just thinking about it. Watching iJustine on the iPad will just be soooo iCool!!

I agree with Strawberry that OLED would definitely have been a plus for this thing, especially if Apple wants to claim they’re in the cutting edge lead with technology. Oh well, maybe for the inevitable 2.0 version.

It would be cool if the iPad was actually more rectangular also, for wide screen video playback. A lot of people are disappointed that it doesn’t come with a built in camera or vid camera like the iPhone, but I figure Apple chose not to considering the vast majority of owners will already have an iPhone with those features anyway and those who want to shoot higher res stills & video can probably connect their DSLR or Flip, etc to the iPad and edit from there. But for that, a faster than 1 Ghz proc would really help. That’s another thing they’ll need to upgrade for next year.

I was super-excited about the iPad before it was introduced. After reading all of the predictions and the hype, they basically had to convince me why I SHOULDN’T get one… Unfortunately, that’s just what they did yesterday. While I love the general idea, I already have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. So for me it really comes down to, “When would I actually use the iPad??” I could see myself using it around my apartment (in place of my laptop) to browse the web, listen to music, and watch video. I’d also love using it for the same reasons while traveling. However, the lack of FLASH and multi-tasking severely limits its usefulness for these tasks. Seriously… Why can’t I watch Hulu on this thing? Or browse the web and listen to Pandora at the same time? Come on, Apple… Other than the big (admittedly gorgeous) screen and the bookstore, what does the iPad offer me that my iPhone doesn’t??

It’s funny to hear the nay-sayers talk about the iPad. I’ve seen people leave comments elsewhere saying that they expected a tablet to fit in their pocket. Really? Do you realize what you’re asking for? It’s one or the other people! They say it’s “too expensive”, but they were also saying that they were willing to pay up to $1K.

Apple did a really nce job with the iPad. It’s the right experience for a device of that size. It’s super sleek, from the hardware to the software. And from all of the videos of it, looks like the A4 processsor is really snappy. I can’t wait to read books, watch videos, and view photos on this thing!

Can’t wait to get the 3G 64GB version!! So excited!!

UGH i would totally get it if it had a camera…maybe i still will…

I really wish it had a camera, but I think I would want the camera to be on the front - not the back, which would allow me to use it for video chat.

Here’s what it would take for me to say that the iPad is an amazing device:
-Multitasking beyond Apple applications (why else would you need 1GHZ of power?)
-Flash
-Front facing camera for skype/ichat
-A landscape doc connector for movie viewing or the optional keyboard

I think that Apple has the best chance of creating a viable tablet market out of anyone, but they don’t appear to be taking it too seriously with this crippled initial release. Here’s hoping to multitasking in 4.0. I can’t help but think that Apple is holding back some iPad features for the iPhone 4.0 announcement and release. But hey, I’d choose an iPad over Kindle any day. Even with it’s flaws, the iPad appears to be a better alternative to many other tablet devices and e-readers, which says something about the quality and functionality of Apple products. I’d also be lying if I said that the page turning feature wasn’t freaking sweet!

You are soooo funny Justine!! I absolutely love your videos and especially the Apple store dance. The iPad looks like an interesting product but more likely something that is a “1 per family” sort of act. Such as having it sit in your kitchen and using it whenever you need (buy movie tickets, checking iTunes new music Tuesday, ect.) But I will definitely be buying it so I can read books WITHOUT the annoying hard/paperback cover. It would though be nice to have a camera on it, but where would you put it? On the front (facing the user), or on the back (for taking pictures)? That is a mystery……well I still can’t wait for the release in March and April (3G)!!!

Second, The ipad looks legit. I definitely plan on getting one but not anytime soon. I’m going to wait until they make one with a camera and by this time I’m pretty sure that it will be a lot better too. Anyways, thanks for sharing your adventure with the ipad on the release date.

I think it’s very cool, I love the size–I too wish it had a camera, but my main beef (as with the iphone) is NO FLASH! Why oh why can’t apple get this straightened out? Many things that I need to deal with online use flash, and both the iphone and ipad are useless in that regard. Come on, apple!

iPad + Pages = Awesome.

I don’t care about a camera or Flash support. Multi-tasking would be nice (play music in the background while doing something else), but not a deal breaker.

There are times it would be handy to have a portable device that you could easily do some work on. A MacBook is portable and all, but sometimes it’s just overkill. If I can do some basic word processing, read books, have web access and watch a movie or TV show on it, the iPad will be great for a lot of things.

It’s not a replacement for a laptop but it will probably do about 80% (or more) of the typical stuff people use a laptop for.

And, if the onscreen keyboard turns out to be a pain, I’ve heard that you can use a bluetooth keyboard instead.

Useless product. People hungry all over the world and we’re worried about touching a screen. :/ Get over it people.

i have a macbook and an itouch.
the ipad seems to be something inbetween.
too big to put in your pocket/purse + no outstanding new features = not a great buy. so… no. i’m not going to buy it.

i might as well use that money to buy an iphone [which has a camera] or a new 32G iTouch.

but that’s just me :p
